When people ask me why I became a doula, the answer is deeply personal. Long before Birthing Peace became a reality, I felt drawn to supporting women during some of the most life-changing moments they would ever experience. Birth has always felt sacred to me. It is a season filled with anticipation, strength, questions, and growth. Over time, I realized I wanted to do more than admire that journey. I wanted to walk alongside families through it.

That calling became the foundation of Birthing Peace and continues to shape the way I approach my doula services every day.

The Moments That Led Me Here

My journey into birth work was not built on a single experience. It started with me watching TLC’s A Baby Story every day after school as a teenager, to being called into labor rooms with friends, and grew through years of witnessing how much support, encouragement, and understanding families need during pregnancy and birth. I saw women carrying the weight of uncertainty while trying to make important decisions for themselves and their babies.

I knew I wanted to be someone who listened without judgment and provided steady support when emotions ran high. As a Christian doula, my faith strengthened my desire to serve others with compassion and care. It taught me the importance of showing up consistently, offering encouragement, and treating every family with dignity and respect.

My own birth experiences also played a significant role in shaping my path into birth work. During my first two births, I often felt swept along by the process rather than actively participating in it. While I was grateful for healthy outcomes, I left those experiences wishing I had better understood my options and felt more confident advocating for myself and my preferences.

Everything changed with the birth of my son. For the first time, I experienced a natural birth where I felt informed, respected, and had the peace and autonomy to labor exactly how I wanted. That experience showed me what was possible when a mother is supported, educated, and empowered to trust both her body and her instincts.

At the same time, I became increasingly aware of the maternal health disparities in the US, especially those affecting Black women and the importance of advocacy within maternity care. Too many women enter birth feeling unheard, unsupported, or unprepared. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution by helping mothers feel empowered, informed, and confident in their ability to make decisions about their care.

Together, those experiences ignited a passion for helping families feel seen, supported, and confident as they navigate pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.

Building Relationships That Matter

One of my favorite parts of being a doula is the relationships I build with families. Every pregnancy is different, and every family brings its own story, hopes, and concerns. I love getting to know the people I serve and learning what matters most to them.

As a black doula, I also understand how important representation and culturally aware support can be. Many families tell me they feel more comfortable knowing they have someone who understands their experiences and advocates for their needs.

Through Birthing Peace, I have had the privilege of supporting families as they prepare for birth, navigate unexpected challenges, and celebrate new beginnings. Those connections are what make this work so meaningful.

The Mission Behind Birthing Peace

At its heart, Birthing Peace is about serving families with honesty, compassion, and dedication. My goal is never to fit families into a specific birth plan or philosophy. Instead, I help navigate the journey with evidence-based information, compassionate support, and unwavering respect for their autonomy.

Through my doula services, I strive to provide practical guidance, emotional encouragement, and steady advocacy when families need it most. Every birth story is unique, and it is an honor to be invited into such an important chapter of someone’s life.

Being a doula is more than my profession. It is a calling that continues to inspire me every day through the families I serve.
