What is a doula, and what exactly do they do?
A doula is a trained birth professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and/or postpartum. Unlike your medical team, a doula focuses on your comfort, confidence, and overall birth experience, helping you feel informed, supported, and empowered every step of the way.
Is hiring a doula worth it if I already have a supportive partner?
Absolutely! A doula doesn’t replace your partner, we support them too! While your partner knows and loves you, your doula brings specialized knowledge, practical comfort techniques, and experience navigating labor and birth. Together, we make a pretty amazing support team!
Do I have to want an unmedicated birth to have a doula?
Absolutely not! A doula supports you, not a particular type of birth. Whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, considering an epidural, or preparing for a scheduled C-section, your doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support tailored to your preferences.
What's the difference between a birth doula and a postpartum doula?
A birth doula supports you during pregnancy and labor, helping you prepare for and navigate your birthing experience. A postpartum doula supports your transition into life with your new baby through hands-on assistance, newborn care guidance, emotional support, and practical help at home. Both focus on caring for you, just during different stages of your journey.
What kind of support will I need during the first few weeks postpartum?
Every family’s needs are different, but one thing is certain: you deserve support, too! Whether it’s help with newborn care, feeding, light household tasks, emotional reassurance, or simply having someone hold the baby while you rest and/or reconnect with your spouse, postpartum support allows you to focus on healing, bonding, and adjusting to your new normal.
Does insurance or Medicaid cover doula services?
Some insurance plans, including certain Medicaid and TRICARE programs, offer coverage for doula services, but benefits and eligibility vary. Birthing Peace is an approved TRICARE doula provider and also offers private-pay services. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider to understand your specific benefits and coverage options.
