Choosing a doula is a very personal decision. As a doula, I’ve met families with different goals, concerns, and expectations for birth. Some want extra emotional support, while others are looking for someone with extensive experience navigating hospital births or helping them prepare for postpartum recovery. When you’re trying to find the right doula, it helps to look beyond websites and social media profiles and focus on the relationship itself.

Look Beyond Certifications and Training

Certifications matter as they can tell you a lot about a doula’s education and professional commitment; still, I always encourage families to look deeper. Experience, communication style, and personality often have just as much impact on your birth experience.

When you’re trying to find the right doula, ask about the types of births they’ve attended, how long they’ve been practicing, and what their approach is when unexpected situations arise. Every doula service is a little different; some doulas take a very hands-on approach during labor, while others focus more on education and advocacy. Understanding these differences can help you narrow your options.

Labor and birth is a very intimate and vulnerable time, so many families discover that the best fit is someone with professional knowledge and experience and a communication style and personality that helps them feel comfortable and supported.

Schedule Consultations and Ask Meaningful Questions

One of the best ways to find the right doula is through a consultation. This conversation should feel comfortable and honest. You deserve to ask questions about philosophy, availability, communication, backup support, and what is included in their doula service.

I also encourage parents to share their hopes and concerns. Whether you’re planning a hospital birth, birth center delivery, or home birth, your doula should be able to explain how they can provide local doula support throughout the process.

Pay attention to how you feel during the conversation. Do you feel heard? Do you feel comfortable asking questions? Those impressions matter.

Another great way to find the right doula is by meeting several doulas in person before making a decision. The Birth Center hosts a Doula Meet & Greet approximately every six weeks, giving expecting families the opportunity to connect with local doulas, ask questions, compare support styles, and find someone who feels like the right fit for their family. Events like these can take some of the pressure out of the search process and help you make a more confident decision.

Find Someone Who Fits Your Family’s Vision

The most important factor when you find the right doula is often the connection you feel. Birth is a life changing experience, and you’ll be spending significant time together during pregnancy and labor.

When comparing options for local doula support, think about your values, communication preferences, and what kind of encouragement helps you feel confident. The right doula service should complement your vision for birth and make you feel comfortable, informed, and supported every step of the way.

Some families are looking for faith-based support. Others prioritize VBAC experience, cultural understanding, military-family experience, or postpartum care. Understanding what matters most to your family can help you identify a doula whose approach aligns with your values and goals.

Also know and understand that a great doula doesn’t replace your partner—they help your partner feel more confident and involved throughout labor and birth. When interviewing doulas, ask how they support both you and your chosen support team.

The right doula should leave you feeling heard, respected, and supported—not pressured. If you’re exploring your options and would like to learn more about how Birthing Peace supports families throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, I’d love to connect and answer your questions.
