Becoming a parent comes with a lot of decisions, and one of the biggest is deciding what kind of support you want during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. As a doula, I spend a lot of time answering questions during consultations from families who are trying to figure out whether doula support is the right fit. Every family is different, but there are a few questions that come up almost every time we sit down together.
Questions I Hear Most Often During Doula Consultations
- How Do You Support My Husband or Partner?
This is probably one of the most common questions I receive. Many partners worry they’ll be pushed aside or replaced during labor. But really, my goal is the opposite. I believe teamwork, makes the dreamwork, and your partner knows you better than I ever could, so I work alongside partners, helping them feel more confident and involved by teaching them the stages of labor, walking them through comfort measures, encouragement suggestions, and practical guidance before and throughout labor.
- When Do You Actually Join Me in Labor?
Many families assume a doula arrives as soon as contractions begin. However because contractions can start and stop and early labor can last anywhere from hours to days, I usually provide support by phone and text in the beginning, then join you in person when labor is active and you need hands-on support. The timing varies based on each family’s unique circumstances.
- How Long Do You Stay After the Baby Is Born?
Families are often surprised to learn that my support doesn’t end when the baby arrives. I remain with you after birth to help with initial recovery, feeding support, questions, and the transition into those first precious hours as a new family. After the birth day, I continue to check-in on families and usually visit within your first few days home.
- What Happens If I Am Induced
This is becoming a frequently asked question as well. Inductions can look very different from spontaneous labor and are often longer than families expect. I help families understand what to expect, provide support and guidance remotely while labor is still early, and join them in person when active labor begins and hands-on support is most beneficial.
- Do You Support Breastfeeding?
While I’m not an IBCLC, I exclusively breastfed all of my children and love helping moms navigate common early breastfeeding questions, positioning, latch concerns, and referrals when additional support is needed.
- What Makes You Different From Another Doula?
This is one of my favorite questions because every doula brings a unique perspective, personality, and set of experiences to the families they serve.
At my core, I believe in physiological birth and a woman’s innate ability to carry, birth, and care for her baby. That doesn’t mean every birth unfolds the same way or goes according to plan. It simply means I trust the process, respect the body’s design, and support mothers in making informed decisions that align with their goals and circumstances.
I do not impose my own birth preferences on families. My role is to support the birth experience YOU want. Whether you’re planning an unmedicated birth, epidural, induction, VBAC, or cesarean birth, my goal is to provide evidence-based information, encouragement, and unwavering support along the way.
I also understand the very real disparities that exist in maternal healthcare. As a Black woman, mom and doula, I am passionate about helping Black and Brown families feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery.
While I never force my faith on anyone, I am a Christian and happily support families who wish to incorporate prayer, Scripture, or faith-based encouragement into their birth experience.
In addition to my experience supporting families, I am a dual-certified birth doula, Certified VBAC Doula, HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator, and trained in Spinning Babies® techniques and TENS unit comfort measures. Most importantly, I strive to be a peaceful, grounding presence during one of the most vulnerable and transformative moments in a family’s life.

I love helping families find answers to every question at a doula consultation and understand their options with confidence. If you’re exploring doula services in New Castle County , I’d love to connect.
